Back at Fenny Compton

Quick rewind to Thursday evening. We went to Ye Olde Reine Deer Inn to take part in their quiz night and were doing quite well, for a two person team, until we came to the last round which was on Music. While we recognised 4 out of the 10 tunes we had little idea of the artists and even less of which two films they featured in!
Top Gun & Cocktail, with Tom Cruise being the common factor would have earned us another 30 points and put us in contention. None the less our 38 points didn’t make us last so we were not disappointed with our efforts.

Friday 4th May

We got away around 10:30 this morning after a quick foray into town. We saw Dusty on their way back south just before we left and headed off for Cropredy.

The relocated roof boxes posed a bit of a problem for Joy judging her entry into locks (I thought it would make it easier!) so when we arrived at Cropredy I made a step out of some decking I had on board so we will see if that helps.

Saturday 5th May

A trip to Cropredy Stores for bread, jam and croissants and a respectable 9:15 start today, great weather and surprisingly few boats on the move. The Step was deemed to be a success, so now we have to to remember it’s there and not fall off of it.

At Claydon Locks we met Ian & Ali who were walking their dogs and helped us through a few locks by closing a couple of gates for us.

At Fenny Marina we stopped to get a pump out and another boat passed us and we hoped they wouldn’t take the last mooring.
We needn’t have worried as a boat was just moving off and we were able to take their place.

It was in easy reach of the pub garden so we were able to enjoy a beer with our sausage sarnies and sit outside in the glorious sunshine… and on a Bank Holiday weekend too.

A Few Days in Banbury

We spent a few days on Tramway moorings finishing off modifying the wiring for the solar panels, making brackets for the boat pole sanding down said pole and giving it a dose of Danish Oil.

Tuesday 1st May

We spent the afternoon and evening with Barry & Ruth today who kindly drove us up to Atherstone to move our car. We called in at Braunston on the way as Barry needed to visit Midland Chandlers so we also visited The Boathouse for lunch.

This evening Dusty, the coalboat, arrived but had sold out of diesel so an early morning call was agreed so they could moor alongside us and get their tank replenished.

Wednesday 2nd May

Just before 7:30am I head the sound of Dusty reversing alongside us in the early morning sunshine, as the fuel tanker had arrived. Fortunately I was dressed, and in no time they had diesel and so did we.

Not long after, it started to rain heavily but about midday the sun came out and we were able to make a dash for the town where we got water & disposed of rubbish, went through the lock and found a spot on Castle Quay for a couple of days.

Thursday 3rd May

Today is Banbury’s market day so we bought fresh fruit and veg, and then I caught the S4 (Oxford) bus and visited Sainsburys to get a few more items.

This afternoon Joy has gone to a Watercolour Class at The Artery.

Tomorrow we plan to head off to Cropredy.

Onwards from Allen’s Lock

Wednesday 25th April

We were up and away early-ish this morning. Just before 9 am a boat came down the lock and wished us ‘Kalimera’ (must be our Greek flag which we use as a wind direction indicator) so we took advantage of the lock being ready and made our departure.

Heyford Common Lock was soon passed, and fields of curious calves entertained us until we reached Somerton Deep Lock.

We were fortunate here as a boat was just leaving & so left the gate open for us, then there were boats waiting to come down so we were able to do the same for them.

Just half a mile on, was Chisnell Lift Bridge, one of the few that are left closed. Some people had said how hard it was to open, but I didn’t find it was, but the cross wind made it difficult for Joy to get back to the bank in order to pick me up, so I had to walk along beside until she passed a moored boat and was able to get me back on board.

Just another mile and, spotting our first ducklings of  the year, we were at Aynho Wharf once more, this time we made sure the water tank was completely full and we made use of their laundry facilities [£5 for a wash & £2 for 40 mins drying time]

Joy chatted to another user while I moored the boat opposite, when I walked back across I met another ex-colleague from Heyford, Ian who now works there as a boat painter & general factotum.

Whilst chatting to Ian, Joy’s phone rang and it was Ruth & Barry asking where we were, “In the launderette, where are you?” “Moored up behind you” they replied. Just then the wash finished & we loaded the dryer and all repaired to the ‘waiting room’ (a.k.a. The Great Western Arms) until the washing was dry and they continued on their way to Heyford, just as the rain started. I’m sure they make a habit of  that! We just stoked the fire up and settled down in front of it for the rest of the day.

Thursday 26th April

Another nine o’clock start today, Aynho Weir Lock and Nell Bridge Lock were done and we pulled up at The Pig Place at 10 am and bought some logs & kindling, did I mention that we had had rain?

Then it was off to Kings Sutton where a large digger was working to put in drainage for the lock cottage buildings it seemed.

We passed through Twyford Wharf & Grants Lock arriving at Banbury’s Tramway moorings at 12:30 and treated ourselves to bacon and eggs for lunch.

I’ve been giving some thought to repositioning our roof boxes to give better visibility ahead, so this afternoon I took my courage in one hand and my angle grinder in the other and cut off the brackets which hold the gang plank and boat pole and set to moving the boxes. Being a Wiltshire Boy, I took inspiration from the builders of Stonehenge and used a stack of planks to lift the boxes and slide them over the mushroom vents & side hatch. The debris of dead leaves and grime under them had to be seen to be believed!

 

 

With the boxes safely re-positioned a temporary route for the cables was rigged up through a roof vent to get the system working. The roof was scrubbed and the plants re-arranged, no doubt to be changed again later. Co-incidentally we are moored in exactly the same place as when I made the boxes back in September 2011.

Friday 27th April

This morning was rainy but it eased off enough for me to walk up town to post an item I had sold on eBay, when I came back we decided that it was dry enough to take the S4 bus down to Oxford.

While we waited for the next bus we found a yellow sailing jacket for Joy at the Katherine House Hospice charity shop for just £1.99, they’ll be able to see her coming now!

I’d forgotten just how long the bus takes, a teeth shaking ride of nearly 1 ½ hours through Oxfordshire villages.

 

We headed for the re-vamped Westgate Centre and discovered Mowgli Street Food where I enjoyed  Spice Omelette Wrap  and Joy had Angry Bird and very nice they were too.

Spice Omelette Wrap – Calcutta’s favourite street food. Fragrant masala frittata with coriander herbed cheese in a soft wholemeal roti wrap.
Angry Bird – Succulent chicken thighs marinated & roasted in tandoor spices, yoghurt, ginger & garlic, served with popped mustard Mowgli Slaw.

As the rain didn’t abate much we didn’t venture outside the Westgate Centre and decided to invest £6.50 each on a train ticket home instead of suffering a free ride on the bus, and got home in half the time.

Leaving Heyford

Sunday 22nd April

This morning we prevailed on Allison to drive us to church at Heyford Park Chapel where we caught up with some of our ‘old’ friends. It was a family service & was notable by it’s lack of children (just two) so the adults had to take part in the craft activities which had been prepared.

Before we returned to the boat we enjoyed drinks & Barm Brack  (Tea Loaf) at Kizzies.  This evening we enjoyed roast beef dinner cooked on board, but before that we had an unscheduled cruise down to the water point, as that tap at Aynho must have been even slower than we thought and we ran out. Anyway, it was a nice evening and we cruised down the ‘The Cleaves’ to turn around. We moored up in the same spot but facing the other way which completely trashed our TV & phone signals!

Monday 23rd April

Allison had to go home today but before she went she kindly took us to Bicester to get some shopping & lunch at Sainsburys.

This evening we went out to our friends Ruth & Barry where we enjoyed an excellent home-made Lamb Curry and chatted about our respective boating plans for this year.

Tuesday 24th April

This morning Denise took Joy up to meet up with friends at ‘Get Active, Stay Active’ Exercise class at Upper Heyford Village hall, part of the Healthy Heyford initative. I meanwhile, took the boat on to Allen’s Lock, where Denise returned Joy to and came aboard for a chat & a coffee.

On the way along I passed a new ‘End of Garden’ mooring with a boat I thought I recognised and a quick check of it’s registration number revealed it was indeed Lady Christine, one of the first boats I worked on at Heyford Wharf back in 2009, she has certainly had a very thorough makeover since then!

We are moored in a peaceful spot far enough from the railway line for it not to be intrusive, looking out to a wild flower bank (see top image) at the bottom of someone’s garden on one side and the River Cherwell on the other.

Good TV signal, good phone signal (GiffGaff/O2 network) but non-existent internet (EE) except through  the phones.

Banbury to Heyford

After spending a few days at Banbury Tramway moorings catching up with friends from our old mooring, Sandra, one of Joy’s friends from her Art Class and a visit from Toni & Chris from Somerton for a meal another visitor arrived on Thursday. Our friend Allison, from Gloucestershire, is staying with us for a few days so she drove us down to Heyford, parked her car there and we caught the train back to Banbury.

Friday 20th April

The ‘girls’ went into town in the morning and hit the charity shops and after lunch we untied just before 3pm and passed through Twyford, Kings Sutton, ‘The Pig Place’ and Nell Bridge.  We moored at  Belchers Bridge at Aynho about 6pm where we were soon joined by a hen party on a hire-boat, they apologised in advance if they were noisy but after they returned from the pub I didn’t hear them at all.

Saturday 21st April

The ‘hens’ were up before us this morning (must have been a tame night) but we were away by 9:20 and stopped at Aynho Wharf to get a pump out and some water, unfortunately there were others with the same idea and an exceedingly slow tap so it was 10:45 by the time we got away from there.

It was a good trip down passing through Somerton Deep Lock (Joy’s least favourite) and through one of my favourite stretches through Somerton Meadows down to Heyford.

Just as we were approaching the lift bridge at Heyford we had a sudden heavy shower, but our friend Andy had just come through the bridge and opened it again for us.

We moored just before Heyford Wharf, so we shall have to get used to being by  the rail line again and will spend a few days here with Allison and catching up with more friends from our days down here before  moving on.

Fenny to Banbury

Wednesday 11th April

Another rest day today as

  1. It was raining
  2. We were moored outside a pub
  3. We had family visiting.

Our son Jeremy came to visit with his family (still the Easter school holidays, apparently) and we fed them with sausage sarnies for lunch, spent the afternoon chatting and Joy played cards with the kids. We ate at The Wharf before they left taking advantage of their 2 for £12 deal.

Whilst waiting for our meal we saw coalboat Dusty turning at the winding hole and I rushed out to ask them for diesel and a couple of bags of coal. Jock and Kati cheerfully served us in the drizzle, while I returned to my tea. After they had moored up they had to come into the pub too so that I could pay them.

Thursday 12th April

Towpath a bit damp!

This morning was showery, but by midday it was just misty so we left, and travelled through Fenny Compton ‘Tunnel’ as far as Boundary lift bridge (near the Warwick/Northants/Oxfordshire borders)  where we were hailed by Ian & Ali, previously of coalboat Gosty Hill and sometime neighbours at Claydon moorings which we passed soon afterwards.

Then it was down the five Claydon Locks, past Clattercote Wharf and Elkingtons, Varneys & Broadmoor locks before mooring above Cropredy lock.

A distinctly damp journey but with no actual rain. We  managed to get an Oxfordshire TV signal (still Birmingham up till now) and settled in for a quiet evening.

Friday 13th April

Canalside Real Estate, beats a caravan in the garden.

It was after 10:30 am before we left  passing a new canalside house being built (we saw the plot for sale back in 2015 see this post).

 

At Cropredy Services we filled with water and went to dispose of our rubbish.

Just a bit full, eh?

I have to say the bins were an absolute disgrace, they couldn’t have been emptied for weeks. The situation doubtless has not been helped by the removal of the bins at Fenny Compton Wharf, leaving boaters to use the facilities at Fenny Compton Marina which are only available during opening hours and closed Sundays & Mondays.

 

We only saw two or three boats on the move all the way to Banbury but it was an easy run, just four locks, and we arrived in town about twenty past one. We will stay here a couple of nights then move down to Tramway, near our old mooring and Morrisons.

 

Fenny Compton Wharf

After having a good time with  Paul and Rosemary last evening and a peaceful night’s sleep with no traffic noise whatsoever we left our overnight mooring  at ten-ish having seen a few early risers go past us. Our first lock was Lock 9 which, due to age and ground settlement, is a bit narrower than most and causes problems for boaters who leave fenders dangling or historic boats with a bit of ‘middle aged spread’. I will probably think of this as Fincher’s Lock from now on, due to the problems nb Flamingo suffered last week, I follow their blog and you can read the story here.

The standard narrowboat width was originally 7 feet  but because of this sort of problem, most modern boats are made 6 feet 10 inches wide.
We made reasonable progress up the flight and cleared the top lock at Marston Doles at 12:40.  We had lunch ‘on the go’ and followed James Brindley’s tortuous route, twisting along, hugging the 400 foot contour all the way.

There were few boats coming the other way so our main company were the sheep and lambs in the fields. We did spot a couple walking the towpath with their dog and cat following along and a chap in hi- viz  in the middle of a field with what looked like some kind of aerial. There was a van parked in the distance but that gave no clue as the telephoto lens showed it was a hired ‘welfare van’.

We arrived at Fenny Compton where we found a mooring almost outside the Wharf Inn at half past three. We planted a little pot of daffodils in memory of Jade as this was one of her favourite places.

 

 

Now at Napton

Sunday 8th April

Sunday being a day of rest we stayed put, and it was rainy anyway, but we did don our walking boots, slosh along the towpath, and take the footpath through the lambs’ field up to All Saints’ Church Braunston  (The Cathedral of the Canals) for their family service.

 

My, my its a long time since we attended a service with hymn books and a formal litany, we’ve been used to having the words of the songs projected onto a screen.

 

We spent  the rest of the day vegging out in front of the TV, blogging and Teddy knitting.

Monday 9th April

6.92 miles, 2h44m, Locks:1 Bridges:18 Average speed:2.52 mph (2.89 lock/mph)

Today we pootled across to the water-point at 9am and once our tank was full set off  through the iconic footbridge towards today’s target, Napton and at 12:10 moored just above the bottom lock where the towpath was less muddy.

Before we left Braunston I contacted Napton Village Stores through Facebook to check if they had a butternut squash to go in this evening’s meal, they had just one left and kindly saved it for us, so my first job of the afternoon was to go and collect it along with some other provisions. I got back just before the rain set in again for the afternoon.

This evening we are expecting our friends and my erstwhile colleagues Paul and Rosemary to visit us for a meal, to chat about our plans for later this year and, no doubt, to generally put the world to rights.

Friday 6th April

Today we caught the bus into Rugby town centre and came back with a rucksack full of shopping from B&M, Asda and the market.

Saturday 7th April

This morning we had intended to fill up with water and move to the moorings on the other side of the canal (where the mooring limit is longer). But by the time we had filled with water, we thought that perhaps we would go as far as top of Hilmorton locks and we got there in just an hour with only a little drizzle.

 

On the way, at Clifton, we noticed  work was going on with preparations to build a new bridge which will serve a large housing development on the site of what the map shows as Rugby Radio Station.

 

 

At Hilmorton, a volunteer lock-keeper was on duty at the first lock to help us through and the other locks were in our favour, so we changed our mind again and headed on for Braunston.

 

 

The new marina, Dunchurch Pools had a lot of boats in already although it looked nowhere near finished  and a little further on I thought I saw a dog appear from some woodland, but in turned out to be Larry the Lamb who bleated and trotted alongside us for a while before seeing some walkers approaching and heading back into the woodland.

We arrived at Braunston at about quarter past one and tied up on the concrete bollards there. After a spot of brunch I washed one side of the roof and fitted a piece of old tyre, turned inside out to present less friction, over the front fender (easier said than done!) to protect the rope-work which is wearing away from contact with lockgates.

 

 

I finished the job by buying some new chain, ‘quick links’ and ‘rigging screw’ adjusters from Midland Chandlers, just across the canal, to replace the rusty old kit that was on there.

Meanwhile Joy was knitting a Teddy Bear with assistance from Linda, back at our mooring by phone and text!

Spring has sprung?

20.10 miles in 8h4m, 1 Lock & 70 Bridges

Today’s weather  lived up to the forecast’s promise so we departed the soggy towpath at Springwood Haven just after nine and decided to make for Rugby.

 

We would normally have taken two days for this journey but the weather turned out to be so perfect today we went for it and achieved our target.

The towpaths were indeed very muddy for most of the journey and although sunny there was still a cold wind.  Soon we were entering the outskirts of Nuneaton, not my favourite stretch as most of the town turns it’s back on the canal.

In one of my ‘If I ruled the world’ moments I thought I would make all offside property owners maintain their land to the water’s edge. Even allotment associations are not innocent and new property developers seem just to erect a fence at the top of the bank and the bank becomes overgrown or worse, an area to dump rubbish. OK rant over!

 

After negotiating the Boot Wharf ‘chicane’ (how on earth will that ‘fat’ boat leave there if not on a lorry)

 

 

Then we entered the ‘nice’ half mile including the house with the crystal tree!

 

 

Onwards to Marston Junction, the turning to the Ashby Canal, past the crazy Charity Wharf which seems to have gained a fat lady and a wolf since last we were here or perhaps we hadn’t noticed before.

We arrived at Hawkesbury Junction just before noon and our only lock of the day ‘Sutton’s’ stop lock just a few inches rise.

Oh if any of you are looking for a waterside property, the old Navigation Inn is up for sale.

 

 

At Rose Narrow Boats I was excited to see an old ‘spoon dredger’ moored and on the way to Ansty lambs were gambolling in the field.

See top image (couldn’t see from the distance whether it was poker or blackjack).

At Newbold, Joy took the boat through the tunnel but when I took over we met a boat at the next bridge-hole and had to reverse past a boat which was moored at the water point.

Just after five we managed to find a slot for Wrens-Nest at Rugby Visitor moorings at Brownsover, ready for a foray into town tomorrow.
